RV Leak Repairs and RV Roof Maintenance

RV Roof Repair Rubber Coating The best leak is the one that never happens. This can only be accomplished with regular maintenance of your RV, which means re-sealing the seams and penetrations on a yearly basis. However, if your RV ever does spring leaks, for any reason, the best leak it can develop is the one you see as a drip inside the RV. It is the leak you do not see that will ruin your beautiful dream machine! Leaks and tears in an RV can quickly lead to more expensive RV leak repairs. Such leaks can allow moisture to access the inner structure of the vehicle. RV leak repairs and RV roof maintenance are now very easy with EPDM rubber and Liquid Roof coating.

During new construction, caulks and sealants are used to waterproof around flashings, vents and other protrusions on your RV roof. Liquid Roof acts as a shield to protect existing caulks, leaks and sealants, and extends their life substantially. The useful lives of metal roofs, whether galvanized steel or aluminum, can also be extended by covering them with roof coatings. Some manufacturers have been using white single-ply EPDM on some of their RV models for several years now. These units are now experiencing chalking and shrinkage problems. Liquid Roof is the best and also the most cost-effective product for solving RV roof leak repair problems. Liquid Roof does not chalk or shrink. Liquid Roof adds substantial longevity to your RV roof, motor home roof, or travel-trailer roof. Also, it will not chalk, crack, peal or flake. Liquid Roof: The Best EPDM Rubber for RV Roofs

Liquid roof coatings are aftermarket products designed to extend life, seal leaks, or merely provide a heat-reflective or aesthetic function over existing roof surfaces. There are many products on the market, including asphalt-based products, rubber solutions [Hypalon, neoprene and silicone], water-based crylic and other emulsions, and chemically curing systems such as urethanes - and now Liquid Roof®. Choosing the right product requires some knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of each.
The most widely used coatings for RV roof leaks repairs are acrylic elastomeric products. These are easy to use, have good weatherability and cure quickly in warm weather. The weakness of these products, however, comes from the fact that they are water-based emulsions, which makes them vulnerable to sudden showers or freezing temperatures soon after application. They also have inherently poor resistance to ponding water. Another drawback for the acrylic products is that they do not work over single-ply EPDM membranes.
Liquid Roof® is a true EPDM rubber, and therefore could be described as a liquid version of the single-ply EPDM membrane, which has established an outstanding performance record spanning more than 30 years. The EPDM chemistry has two unique features not possessed by any other rubber: it is unaffected by ultraviolet radiation and ozone, and it can tolerate continuous exposure at temperatures above 300 F. The latter feature is also what gives EPDM rubbers the best aging properties of all the elastomers [they retain flexibility longer].
Liquid Roof® is the only liquid EPDM product currently on the market. It is priced higher than the acrylics, but this single disadvantage is more than outweighed by Liquid Roof's performance advantages and nearly total lack of conditions that can result in disastrous failures. Many roofs will pond water. The Gulf states all experience sudden afternoon showers. The Northern states experience rapid temperature drops late in the day during spring and fall. These kinds of situations might result in only minor cosmetic surface distortions to Liquid Roof®, while the acrylic-coating-based products could be partially or totally destroyed.

RV Roof Surface Preparation

RV maintenance is essential to preserving the value of your RV investment. Routine RV maintenance should be done in regular intervals, and record-keeping is essential. Here is a core checklist of essential maintenance to begin your RV roof surface preparation. First you need to remove all the fixtures and edge moldings from the roof, as you may need to make the roof coating softer for easier maintenance. Remove peeling paint and brittle caulking. Heavy buildup of asphalt roof cement should also be removed. Tighten any loose fasteners and replace those with severe corrosion. Repair or replace roof panels damaged by storms. Remove heavy rust with abrasive discs or wire brushes. Power-wash all surfaces to be coated and allow thorough drying. Caulk all gaps wider than 1/16 inch that are not expansion- and contraction-slip surfaces. After the roof work is complete, ask the contractor to go over proper roof maintenance with you.
